Tonight I made my way once again to the Tenebrae service at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis. If you’ve never been to a Tenebrae service in a similarly majestic locale, please, do it at some point in your life. I’m not Catholic (or even a theist, for that matter) but it’s an otherworldly aesthetic experience, and a richly dark one at that. And to hear a professional choir sing Allegri’s Miserere inside that soaring architecture is beyond words. What an incredible work of art, with a tremendously fascinating history, both of which you’ll find in this brief but fabulous documentary from the BBC:
