Gregorio Allegri | Miserere mei, Deus

Making my annual pilgrimage tonight to the Tenebrae service at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis. If you’ve never been to a Tenebrae service in a similarly majestic locale, please, do it at some point in your life. I’m not Catholic (or even a theist, for that matter) but it’s an otherworldly rich, dark aesthetic experience. And to hear a professional choir sing Allegri’s Miserere inside that soaring architecture, amidst a veil of incense drifting ever upwards, is beyond words.

What an incredible work of art, with a tremendously fascinating history (including a 14 year old Mozart defying a pope), both of which you’ll find in this brief but fabulous documentary from the BBC:
