No borders

“We will have to separate your family. That’s no different than what we do every day in every part of the United States when an adult of a family commits a crime.” -Kirstjen Nielsen, DHS Secretary

Ms. Nielsen failed to mention however that these are bullshit laws, premised on bullshit borders.

I don’t really know where to start with this–it makes my blood boil and my heart ache. A more dispassionate, structured piece on border policy will have to wait for another day. Try, try, try to put yourself in the shoes of these parents, these children. Watch this brief video (turn the sound up!) of a mother and son being reunited, and then imagine the thousands of parents and children who haven’t yet been reunited, and perhaps never will be. Imagine your own children being ripped from your arms, kidnappees in a cruel political game. I can only hope that such particularly egregious and visible violations as these might help to really sway the tide of public opinion against restrictive immigration policies.

And if that’s not enough, maybe we can start to educate ourselves as to the economic absurdity that underlies the widespread fears that immigrants are going to “steal our jobs” and “our tax dollars.” I’ve posted this video before, but wanna draw attention to it yet again: by careful professional estimates, open borders across the globe would lead in relatively short order to an astonishing doubling of global GDP. An unimaginable economic boon for nearly every human on earth. Here’s a very brief intro on the topic, from economist Bryan Caplan of George Mason (a radical free market guy, in case you’re wondering–certainly not an economic lefty).
